This is my log of what I did to create this website. I'm thinking after I am done I may flesh this out into a quickstart tutorial for those interested in creating a site with the Joomla opensource CMS - Cheers, Gary

Dec. 15, 2006

- Created gp directory. copied joomla 1.x.16 to gp, ran install

- logged in as admin, added gary as new user/administration

- added this page as new static content item, added to main menu

- installed joomlaFCK editor, as this editor lets you upload and select pictures directly from the editor, and it's free.

- installed mycontent, which allows a logged in user to see and edit all their content from the frontend.

- installed allvideos. This plugin lets you easily include media, videos, audios, youtube videos, etc, into your content

- install akocommentweaked, to allow visitors to comment on blogs

- installed caldate., which replaces the text date with a cool little calendar icon

- installed lightfast template. I like the clean readable feel of this template, and wanted one professional template to look at before I eventually create my own from scratch. I purchased this from Joomlashack

- installed wimpy player as my audio playerr. I purchased this.

-take wimpy player code from Mywimpy.html and paste it to the Audio player page. Save. Edit audio player page, right click on Flash item, go to Advanced tab, set scale to "fit", disable auto play and loop, enable flash menu, click save.

- installed rd_rss (run-digital.com) rss feed component

- Uninstalled syndicate component, and unpublished the joomla frontpage component, as I don't like either of them

- Created new feed with rd_rss component for all categories. Added a line to my template for the feed so the RSS icon would show up in browser navigation areas for people to subscribe to my feed.

- installed jce editor component and mambot to see if it works better than joomlafck editor. The background of the edit client area was dark, unreadable, so I entered this code at the end of template_css.css

</p>
<p>
body.mceContentBody {<br />
margin:0;<br />
padding:0;<br />
text-align: left;<br />
background: white;<br />
background-color: #FFFFFF !important;<br />
background-image: none;<br />
}<br />
</p>

SEO URLs
Joomla has built in SEF which I use on my site, but it isn't very flexible. Much better is OpenSEF for Joomla which I've used for sites I've done for clients, and it works fine except you have to be careful to pick components and modules that are compatible. About 3/4 of them are. Cheers, Gary

Well I've started the process and this will take a couple more days to go live. Did you do anything about search friendly URLs, which WP seems to accomoadte quite nicely?. My only concern is losing the SEO i've established with WP.

Paul, glad you like the site. As for migrating your wordpress blog, the most difficult thing will be transferring your existing data. As for installing Joomla and the lightfast template and how I made it into a blog format is pretty easy. I could help you on any aspect if you run into problems. The first step would be just to install Joomla and play with it a little bit. Cheers, Gary

Gary, I like what you've done here. I'm thinking about migrating my wordpress blog over to this Joomla template. How well do you think it would lend itself to lightfast and technically, how difficult would it be?
