MP3: Girlfriend

I have to admit, the new single, Girlfriend, from Avril Lavigne's 2007 album, made me laugh out loud. I burned it on a CDR and it was even funnier when Addison and I were driving down Dale Mabry with it blaring and singing it at the top of our lungs.

It's just a dumb fun song, in the spirit of early Ramones, Rubinoos (was someone listening to I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend?) and Runaways and all those wonderful bubblegummy Chinn-Chapman 3 minute wonders. And how can you not love a song with the lyrics:

Don’t pretend I think you know I’m damn precious
And Hell Yeah I’m the motherfucking princess

Those lyrics remind me so much of many of the girls and women I have known in my life. Hunterre and Bobbie, and their mother Debbie Moody, Debbie Cohen, Brenda Rouse, and Dianne Dugan. Or Cathi and Janet back when they first honked at me in 10th grade. I remember thinking they were crazy girls, mysterious and wonderful.

You can easily see bad girl Hunterre mouthing those lyrics, but for the rest of them it's just bubbling right below the "good girl" sheen, whether they want to admit it or not. LOL. So this one is for you girls. You can play it here, or go to the audio player if you want to download it.
